Ground Specialists, Inc. implemented bio-engineering slope protection works at a mining site in Mindanao to support environmental compliance requirements and enhance long-term slope stability. The project was designed to align with regulatory standards while utilizing predominantly natural materials that integrate with the surrounding environment over time.
The selected approach combined structural and vegetative elements to provide both immediate reinforcement and progressive stabilization as plant systems matured. Coconets, cocologs, gabions, and boulders were installed to stabilize the slope, while vetiver grass, kakawate (madre de cacao), and mani-mani were introduced to establish vegetative cover and strengthen the soil. An HDPE liner was strategically applied to protect and preserve the earth canal from erosion caused by continuous water flow.
A significant challenge arose when one of the strongest typhoons to affect the region impacted the project area. While minor erosion and reworks were required, early progress and proactive execution allowed the team to recover efficiently and stay on schedule. The project was completed on time and within budget, and was formally accepted by the client without rectifications — another big success for GSI.
🛠️ Nature and engineering working together for lasting stability. That’s the GSI way.
