Following our recent Project Profile on a large-scale mixed-use development, we take a closer look at another important component of the slope protection system: erosion control mats.

Within the same project, Ground Specialists, Inc. installed erosion control mats across exposed slope sections to help protect the soil surface during early-stage stabilization and vegetation growth.

Erosion control mats are protective coverings placed directly over exposed soil to help reduce surface erosion caused by rainfall and runoff. By holding soil in place, they help minimize washouts, reduce sediment movement, and maintain slope surface integrity while other stabilization measures take effect.

These mats also create a more favorable environment for vegetation establishment, supporting hydroseeding and natural plant growth that contribute to long-term slope protection.

Used alongside soil nailing, non-frame stabilization, hydroseeding, and drainage systems, erosion control mats formed part of an integrated approach to maintaining slope stability across the development.
