Project Profile: Coastal Excavation Support Part 1

Before permanent construction could begin on a major power infrastructure project, a deep excavation had to be created to make room for the structures below.

The site presented several challenges. Located in a coastal environment, the excavation encountered variable ground conditions including silty sandy gravel, boulders, and fractured rock, along with significant groundwater inflow. The depth of the excavation and limited working space added further demands, requiring the excavation walls to remain stable while construction activities continued at the base.

GSI was brought in to provide temporary lateral support for the excavation. The work called for a support system that could adapt to changing ground conditions while maintaining a safe working environment for the construction team.

For a project this deep and demanding, keeping the excavation stable was essential to keeping the work moving forward.

In Part 2: We’ll look at how GSI carried out the excavation support works and managed the challenges encountered along the way.
